Probiotics

Probiotics are a type of microorganisms that have a favorable influence on the health of animals as they are known to balance the intestinal microflora. Probiotics primarily affect the gut activity by impacting its ecological system. In the case of dogs and cats, probiotics serve their purpose by keeping the gut microflora in balance. Maintaining the gut microflora is a crucial part of maintaining the processes happening in the animals' bodies. The most frequently used probiotics are Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium, Bacillus coagulans plus others.

In regular health maintenance and long-term usage, Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium-based probiotics should be used because these types of probiotics serve as a basis for gut health maintenance. They are a perfect choice for the long-term use and beneficial for animals suffering from excess weight, diarrhea, or low immunity levels.

In rare cases of short-term use, Bacillus coagulans bacteria can be used due to their stability. Bacillus coagulans acts as a good "pathfinder" for the cases of dysbacteriosis accompanied by changes in diets, change of environment, or being parts of treatment for diarrhea.

What the research says.
Probiotics Regulate Gut Barrier and Immune Homeostasis via Pattern Recognition Receptor Signaling and Modulation of NF-κB and MAPK Pathways
Probiotics deliver good health effects via multiple mechanisms such as regulating gut flora composition, adhering to intestinal mucosa, improving the integrity of the intestines, and regulating immunity. Probiotics interact with mechanisms that facilitate recognition of microorganisms (like TLRs and NLRs) and control signaling pathways such as NF-κB and MAPK to promote protection against infection and balance among processes in the immune system.

Exopolysaccharides from Lactic Acid Bacteria and Bifidobacteria as Prebiotic Substrates: Modulating Gut Microbiota via Fermentation and Beneficial Bacterial Growth
The exopolysaccharides (EPS) generated by the genera Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium possess an ability to not be digested, thus providing prebiotic substrates to the microbiome for fermentation benefitting the development of beneficial microbes and the regulation of intestinal microecology.

Probiotic Lactobacilli and Bifidobacteria in Inflammatory Bowel Disease: Modulating Gut Microbiota and Immune Responses for Ulcerative Colitis Management
Probiotics from Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium may offer therapeutic benefits of prevention and support for persons suffering from inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) by regulating the gut microbiome and improving immune response; particularly during periods of remission and sustained treatment of ulcerative colitis (UC).

Anticancer Potential of Lactic Acid Bacteria: Bioactive Metabolites and Immune Regulation in Tumor Suppression
Lactic acid bacteria, also known as LAB, are able to provide anticancer potential via producing bioactive metabolites like SCFAs, exopolysaccharides as well as bacteriocins; in addition they also enhance the antitumor capacity within the body by modulating immune responses. Research has demonstrated that LAB help prevent tumors via various mechanism including the suppression of tumorigenic cell proliferation, induction of apoptosis, cell cycle arresting, inhibition of angiogenesis and the reduction of inflammation.

Bacillus coagulans as a Robust Probiotic Feed Additive: Enhancing Gut Health, Nutrient Utilization, and Immune Function in Animal Production
Bacillus coagulans is a good candidate as a probiotic. It has a high potential to be used as a probiotic in animal production. This organism can improve animal health and production performance by regulating gut microbiota and optimizing nutrient digestion/absorption processes and activating immune system functions. In addition, Bacillus coagulans has many excellent properties, such as high heat resistance, acid resistance, and resistance to bile salts, making it an ideal candidate for use as a feed supplement for livestock and poultry.

Safety and Gut Health Benefits of Bacillus coagulans Supplementation in Healthy Dogs: Improved Fecal Quality and Beneficial Microbiota Modulation
The supplementation with Bacillus coagulans is beneficial and safe for use on healthy dogs. It has been shown to have no negative effect on nutrient digestibility, blood parameters or immune system parameters. Supplementation with Bacillus coagulans also improves stool consistency and makes them more formed than previously observed. It has been found that Bacillus coagulans supplementation will help to modulate the intestinal microflora of the dog by increasing beneficial bacteria such as Faecalibacterium, Bifidobacterium etc., thus promoting the overall gastrointestinal health of dogs.
