Chamomile, an herbal supplement commonly used in people's tea for its calming properties, can have the same effect on cats and dogs. The two kinds of Chamomile commonly used in pet care include German Chamomile and Roman Chamomile, with most pet products made from German Chamomile. Chamomile is most widely used in the veterinary profession because of its sedative, anti-inflammatory and muscle-relaxing qualities.
Chamomile contains flavonoids and other natural substances that help ease anxiety and nervousness in pets. For this reason, it is especially useful for pets that often experience extreme stress responses due to being transported or changing locations or for emotional support animals. Because of its mild and gentle action, Chamomile can also provide relief for pets who have mild gastrointestinal upset, including soft stools/diarrhea or stomach upset, while providing a gentle coating on the intestinal mucosa. In addition to its soothing effects, Chamomile has anti-inflammatory and antipruritic (anti-itching) properties, which make it useful for soothing skin allergies and inflammation, as well as cleaning the ear canal.
